ONLINE NEVADA ENCYCLOPEDIA (ONE) ANNOUNCES PREMIERE OF CIVIL RIGHTS GALLERY IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH
New interactive online exhibit sponsored by Nevada Humanities explores an important part of Nevada’s heritage with audio clips and historic images

Reno, Nev., Feb. 8, 2008 — Nevada Humanities announces the premiere of an interactive Civil Rights Gallery to be part of its Online Nevada Encyclopedia (ONE) in honor of Black History Month. The online exhibit allows visitors to explore various aspects of the Civil Rights movement as it played out in Nevada.

“We are hoping that the Civil Rights Gallery will be a way for Nevadans to explore an important part of our heritage,” said Karen Wikander, managing editor of the Online Nevada Encyclopedia, often called the ONE. ”This is the latest of many exciting features we have been adding to the ONE, and we want to encourage people to drop by frequently to see what is new.”

Developed by Nevada Humanities, the ONE launched in March 2007 and offers nearly 600 articles and interactive features, including more than 150 representative virtual realities of various sites throughout the state. “Roughly 50,000 people have visited the ONE in the past year. Students, residents and national and international visitors make up the spectrum of people who have learned about Nevada from this valuable resource,” Wikander said.

ONE’s Civil Rights Gallery captures unique images from the struggle for Civil Rights in Nevada, while the captions highlight the voices of historic Nevadans who lived through and experienced the era. For more detailed context and for entries dedicated to the people and events seen in the exhibit, online users can link from the gallery to the ONE’s collection of articles on African American history and Civil Rights.

“The exhibit was created in partnership with a variety of projects and archival repositories and is just the first stop in a tour of Civil Rights history in Nevada,” Wikander said.

A majority of the images and text in the Civil Rights Gallery have been provided by the University of Nevada, Reno Oral History Program’s project Nevada Voices, which provides full transcripts of the interview excerpts found in the gallery, along with audio clips and images. The ONE exhibit also benefits from materials provided by the Oral History Research Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas; and the Special Collections Departments at the University of Nevada-Reno Library and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

“The new Civil Rights Gallery is a wonderful way to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans in Nevada history,” said Ken Dalton, a former president of the Northern Nevada Chapter of the NAACP. “I want to thank Nevada Humanities for funding this project and putting this online.”
