What is ONE?

The Online Nevada Encyclopedia (ONE) is a dynamic, multi-media, online resource for information on all things Nevada.  ONE incorporates articles, images and interactive media to explore the topography, politics, economy, people and events that have shaped the Silver State’s cultural landscape.  ONE helps preserve Nevada’s history and heritage and makes this story accessible to the general public.  ONE is the first comprehensive reference work on Nevada and one of only a handful of online state encyclopedias.

What will you find on ONE?

  • Dynamic content including articles, images and interactive media.
  • Interpretive essays and articles that connect Nevada to national and global events, and offer balanced perspectives and alternate points of view on contemporary issues.
  • Resources include suggested readings and illustrations in addition to internal and external links.

What makes ONE useful?

  • Unlike Wikipedia-style sites, all ONE articles are written and reviewed by historians, scientists, folklorists and other experts providing a highly reliable information resource.
  • ONE is fast, easy to use, and completely searchable.
  • ONE is unique among online encyclopedias in that it uses interactive multi-media.
  • ONE allows the use to go places they may not have visited and to immerse themselves in Nevada’s culture and geography.
  • ONE is a living and dynamic reference resource designed to evolve with technology.
  • ONE’s content can be rapidly updated and space is unlimited.
  • ONE provides the historic context that is essential for the rational and informed contemplation of current issues.

ONE is a project of Nevada Humanities
For 35 years, Nevada Humanities has supported Nevada research, exhibits, publications and speakers.  ONE draws on this legacy.  Much of the cultural memory of the state is in scholarly books or in the memories of older residents.  ONE is preserving these memories for future generations.

ONE is being developed with the generous support of the State of Nevada, U.S. Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and in collaboration with the State’ s archives and museums.  Additional financial support for ONE provided by the Gannett Foundations, L.J. and Mary C. Skaggs Foundation, Citibank, the Las Vegas Centennial Commission and the Clark J. Guild, Jr. Charitable Foundation.  ONE is being designed by Twelve Hoses, a website-design firm.
