Cheryll Glotfelty

Bio:

Cheryll Glotfelty is a professor of English at the University of Nevada, Reno, and a walking encyclopedia of Nevada lore. Twelve years of research went into the making of her 832-page compilation Literary Nevada: Writings from the Silver State, which is a comprehensive state anthology. Cheryll is a dynamic speaker and teacher who has won numerous awards, including the Nevada Regents Distinguished Teaching Award and the CASE-Carnegie Nevada Professor of the Year award. She has given more than two dozen talks in seventeen different cities, towns, and crossroads throughout Nevada. For her Humanities on the Road presentations, she enjoys liaising with prospective host organizations to create an event that is tailor-made for each occasion. Cheryll lives with her husband and daughter in Sparks and enjoys exploring Nevada's outback.

DESERT DREAMS: A HISTORY OF NEVADA LITERATURE

How many Nevada authors can you name?  If the answer is fewer than five, then this presentation is for you. Just as the California ‘49ers had no idea that gold and silver lay underfoot as they hurried across Nevada, so, too, most readers have yet to discover the fabulous stories and poetry to be found right here, in Nevada. This presentation hits the highlights of the Silver State’s literary heritage, from Native American oral tales, to explorer and immigrant accounts, to cowboy poetry, Reno divorce novels, Las Vegas inside stories, travel writing, and more.

WORDS IN THE DESERT: STORIES OF FINDING HOME IN NEVADA

Discovering Nevada's literary heritage is like hunting for gold. Dr. Glotfelty spent more than a decade combing through libraries and archives, prospecting for Nevada stories and poems. There were many Eureka! moments when she found especially interesting and beautifully written accounts of the Nevada experience. In this presentation, Professor Glotfelty shares choice stories from a range of literary artists whose work speaks eloquently of the various ways that people have found home in Nevada.
