Join us for a day of poetry and outdoor exploration at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge! Local poet JM Huck and Dale Etheridge Planetarium staff will guide participants in experiencing and appreciating our Nevada landscape, as well as the wildlife within.

In the first half hour, participants will take a slow-paced nature walk on these Corn Creek trails:

  • Big Horn Loop (partially paved) .35 miles

  • Coyote Loop (dirt) .35 miles

Between 10:00 and 10:30 am, we will move to the picnic area for readings from Sagebrush to Sandstone: A Humanities Guide to Outdoor Nevada, as well as a few of Huck’s original poems inspired by Sagebrush to Sandstone

From about 10:30 to 11:30 am, participants will then be invited to make their own poems or journal entries, in response to the landscape and wildlife. Feel free to bring food, water, and snacks to enjoy. You may also explore other nearby trails during this time.

At 11:30 am, the Sagebrush to Sandstone event concludes. Those wishing to continue exploring indoor areas can head over to the Visitor Center.

This event is free. You do not have to be a nature poet to participate, all who appreciate nature and the spoken/written word are welcome. Space is limited and registration is required.

Please use Visitor Center Parking. Restrooms are located inside the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. Note—tree cover in the picnic area is partial and not fully covered. Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and stay hydrated!

The Dale Etheridge Planetarium is Southern Nevada’s only public planetarium, where the stars are literally the stars of the show. By creating virtual realities on their impressive 30-foot 360-degree dome, they surround visitors with simulated educational and entertaining content in an environment that is unparalleled in Southern Nevada. The planetarium offers field trips and private reservations year-round, as well as an AstroKids Summer Camp and educational workshops and special events throughout the year. They also offer a public program on Fridays & Saturdays with a variety of planetarium shows and telescope viewing at the observatory, weather permitting.
