Going Online, Going Insane

By Gavin Garcia

The reality of our situation right now is that it’s really bad. It really shows the vulnerability of our society with how we’re very reliant on socializing and human interaction. The coronavirus is really just the beginning of the real deadly viruses that will follow-- which is inevitable. There is no way to beat a pandemic and the only way to really face it, is with humor. Even though many people have died and will die and we have all gone through hardships, sometimes the best you can do is keep on going and looking out for each other. Laugh with each other and make memories. I received a great amount of inspiration from the Italian writer, Giovanni Boccaccio. Boccaccio wrote a series of humorous stories during the plague in Italy. He wrote these stories to distract people from their pandemic hardships. I wanted to do the same thing with my original song. Lastly, I wanted to dedicate this song to my grandfather who had passed away a couple of weeks ago. He wasn’t able to make it through the pandemic. He was always supportive of me and my music. He was always so happy to hear me play. I hope this song can bring you and your loved ones comfort as well.

Going Online, Going Insane
Original song and lyrics by Gavin Garcia

Chords:
Verse: D, F#m
Chorus: A, D, F#m, E

Chorus: x2

Going online
I’m going insane
Pandemic pods
Get pretty mundane
We need a vaccine
To take away the pain
Need to look out for each other
So we can sustain

Verse 1:

The pandemic froze us
Where do we start?
We’re in this together
6 feet apart
Computers required
We need internet to meet
We order all meals
Using UberEats

Chorus: x2

Going online
I’m going insane
Pandemic pods
Get pretty mundane
We need a vaccine
To take away the pain
Need to look out for each other
So we can sustain

Verse 2:

Boccaccio wrote the
Decameron
He is a pandemic
Comedian
His stories tell us
About social decline
He taught us to laugh
Even if the world isn’t fine

Chorus: x2

Going online
I’m going insane
Pandemic pods
Get pretty mundane
We need a vaccine
To take away the pain
Need to look out for each other
So we can sustain

Bridge:

Please be gentle
For my mental
Don’t want to be
sentimental
Wear a mask
It’s preferential
Don’t party
It’s detrimental
Please be gentle
For my mental
Don’t want to be
sentimental
Wear a mask
It’s preferential
Don’t party
It’s detrimental
It’s the law
It’s governmental
This pandemic’s
Monumental
Wash your hands
It’s a fundamental
Next here comes
The instrumental

*Instrumental

Chorus: x3

Going online
I’m going insane
Pandemic pods
Get pretty mundane
We need a vaccine
To take away the pain
Need to look out for each other
So we can sustain

Salutations everyone! My name is Gavin Garcia. I’m currently in my senior year at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I’ve been a street musician (also known as a busker) for 10 years. I’ve roamed all over the Strip and Fremont Street playing the ukulele. I’ve been playing the ukulele for 12 years. Busking is one critical part of my life and I plan on busking no matter where I live in the future. I don’t believe that I’m the greatest musician or that I’m entitled to an audience. I genuinely just love sharing that moment with strangers, that safe moment, where everything around us doesn’t exist and time completely stops. I love that moment when one song can connect people together; it can connect the single mother, the veteran, the doctor, the alcoholic, the preacher, the prostitute, the fireman, and the college student that plays the ukulele. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from because at that moment, we are all the performers and we are singing our hearts out to the world.
