Mojave Shadows is a collaborative art and science exhibition exploring the vital role of shade in sustaining life in the Mojave Desert, featuring photography, painting, illustration, and essays created at Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. The exhibition brings together art and ecology to reveal how shadow, temperature, and time shape desert survival. Through visual storytelling, Mojave Shadows invites viewers to see the desert’s hidden life in a new light.
The exhibition is curated by Steve Dudrow, a desert photographer, writer, and podcast host whose work explores the power of light and shadow in the Mojave Desert. Drawing on his experience as an archaeological steward, interpretive guide, and public lands volunteer, Dudrow brings scientific curiosity and artistic sensitivity to his curation for this exhibition.
Mojave Shadows includes works by DeAnna Beachley, Sydney Carnevale-Baker, JT Dudrow, Steve Dudrow, Matthew Flores, Alex Harper, Paula Jacoby-Garrett, Aaron Leifheit, Teresa Skye, and Emma Woods.
This exhibition at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery is supported by Nevada Humanities’ generous donors. Mojave Shadows also received support from the Beverly Rogers and Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute and Mystery Ranch, a desert research station, nature preserve, and arts residency located within the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.
Nevada Humanities Program Gallery is open for viewing Monday – Friday, 1:00 to 5:00 pm, and on the first Friday of the month until 10:00 pm for First Friday events.
